Black Forest Press Audio
Concept, quality standards and long-term direction
What is Black Forest Press Audio?
Black Forest Press Audio is the audio division of Black Forest Press – and a place where stories, authors and voices come together.
We want to connect authors and narrators and create a platform where exchange, creativity and collaboration lead to memorable listening experiences.
Authors bring their stories; narrators bring their voices, experience and interpretation. Black Forest Press Audio brings these worlds together and guides the resulting projects on their way to finished audiobooks.
Our goal is a lively audio community in which people produce together, with respect for the work, joy in shaping it and a shared ambition to make the best possible listening experience from a good story.
Our goal and quality standards
We aim to produce audiobooks that do justice to the story and its author's distinctive voice while making use of the possibilities of audio.
Our focus is fantasy and science fiction. These genres offer an opportunity to make worlds audible, not merely tell stories.
For us, quality begins before recording: with the text, how it works when spoken and the choice of the right voices. Professional recording, careful editing and considered sound design form the basis of our productions.
Technology should never be an end in itself. Voices, music, atmosphere and sound effects serve the story and are used deliberately where they enrich the listening experience.
Our measure is not how much we produce, but whether we give each work the attention it deserves.
In the end, listeners should feel they have spent time inside the story's world, not merely heard it.
How we produce our audiobooks
Every production begins with the story.
Before the first recording, we study the manuscript, its characters and the world they inhabit. Together, we develop the right approach to its sound and choose voices that bring that world to life.
Recording is followed by editing and processing and, where it suits the story, the deliberate use of music, atmosphere and sound effects.
With fantasy and science fiction in particular, we want these elements to form a coherent whole. The aim is to experience a story, not just hear it.
What sets our productions apart from traditional audiobooks
A traditional audiobook relies primarily on text and voice. Where the story allows it, we take a step further.
Fantasy and science fiction offer worlds that can be shaped acoustically as well as told. Different voices, carefully chosen sounds, atmosphere and music can help bring those worlds to life for listeners.
Our principle is to use exactly what is right, rather than as much as possible. The production should strengthen the story, never distract from it.
This gives rise to our own form of audiobook: told like an audiobook, shaped with the possibilities of modern audio production.
Voices, sound effects and music
The voice remains at the heart of our productions. Music, atmosphere and sound effects support it where they give a scene added depth.
In fantasy and science fiction, they can suggest spaces, worlds and situations beyond the spoken word. We use these elements deliberately – sometimes powerfully, sometimes almost imperceptibly.
What matters is how they work together: voice, story and sound should complement one another, not compete.
This creates atmosphere without turning an audiobook into an audio drama.
Working with narrators and the audio community
Good audiobooks are made by people who bring their passion and skills together.
Black Forest Press Audio therefore wants to work with professional narrators and build a lively audio community where authors and narrators can meet, exchange ideas and develop new projects together.
Narrators should do more than simply deliver a voice. Their experience, interpretation and personality are part of the creative process.
At the same time, we want to help authors find the right voice for their stories and work together from the first idea to the finished audio production.
Stories become projects. Voices become worlds. And collaboration creates listening experiences.
Our long-term goals
Black Forest Press Audio should grow with its stories, voices and community.
Our long-term goal is to become a destination for high-quality fantasy and science-fiction audiobooks while offering authors and narrators a platform for new connections and joint productions.
We want to keep expanding our narrator pool, discover new voices and develop exceptional audio projects together with authors.
Black Forest Press Audio should retain its own character: personal in collaboration, professional in production and bold in creative execution.
We do not simply want to produce more audiobooks. We want to create worlds worth listening to.
